Hello everyone! Brownie is now home with us! It looks like Brownie doesn’t need to be cut under the knife anymore!Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok here’s the initial plan we discussed with the vet yesterday. First, Brownie was given some Metacam pain killers. So once the pain has been reduced, he actually started feeling better and started eating more and more which is GREAT because he’d need as much energy as he can gain before the surgery. The vets from BBEV (Brisbane Bird & Exotics Veterinary Service) are wonderful! They’d ring and keep me up to date with Brownie’s situation. They rang me before Brownie went to bed the night he was kept hospitalized, they rang me next day morning and told me Brownie has gained some weight since they critical care fed him; they also rang me before they give anaesthesia on Brownie. And they will give me a call before the surgery begins.
So while I was waiting impatiently for the next phone call. Deborah rang! In the beginning, I had a hard time understanding all the medical terms she said, but I was relieved to hear this from her “After the anaesthetic, I had a good feeling when I checked Brownie’s broken bones, it felt like the body is actually doing the healing itself, there are some scar tissues formed to fill the gap between the broken edges. In another word, tissue repair helps hold the bones together, which I don’t think it’s necessary to open him up and put a pin through the broken bones when the body is doing something.”
“What a relief!” I said “So he won’t need a surgery?”
Deborah: “No, well, not at this stage, but Brownie will need to come back for a post operative recheck in 7 days to make sure he’s doing good enough.”
Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
We’re so proud of you Brownie!
Ok so here’s what we need to give him till he’s fully recovered.
- Metacam (painkiller) Give 0.05ml by mouth twice daily
- Vitamin C: Give half tablet once daily
- Critical Care for Herbivores. At least 50ml per day
He’s still feeling slight drowsiness as complete recovery from anaesthesia may take up to 48 hours
poor little thing :(
Besides his daily diet, we still need to force feed him to prevent Gut Stasis. Guinea pigs won’t eat well when they’re in pain so we need to prevent this from happening by syringe feed him.
Unlike a dog or a cat, when a guinea pig stops eating it is a very serious problem and can cause death.
Still feeling drowsy and tired
I left his x-Ray with the vet, this is one I stole from the internet. Well, this is actually not quite similar to his but you get the idea.
His femur is broken into half, initially we decided to give him a surgery by putting a pin through the broken bones, this will helps connects the bones together and eventually heal. This pin will need to be taken off after the recovery so the leg become normal again. But because right now the body is doing the healing itself, there are some tissues build around the edges (as mentioned above) we do not need to perform a surgery on Brownie. But because the bones are not joint back together, his right leg will be shorter than the other one, but we’re happy for him to be like this as long as he recovers. He doesn’t need a long leg anyway. : )

so i just forward what dajie wrote at her blog hehe
the Critical Care he need to eat is really sooo many
it is hard to feed him
and take lotssss time
so poor thing
have to eat so much even though he dont wanna eat
